Where to try Canarian food and tapas in Tenerife
Tapas and Canarian food are not the same thing. Tapas describes small plates made for sharing; Canarian cooking is the island's own repertoire of potatoes and mojo, grilled cheese, gofio, stews, fish, rabbit and goat. A Tenerife bar may offer both, or only one. Use this page when you want to taste several local dishes without committing the whole day to a rural guachinche or a formal tasting menu.
- For a first meal, share three or four dishes instead of ordering every famous name. Papas arrugadas, grilled cheese, garbanzas and one fish or meat dish give a useful introduction.
- Ask whether the menu offers tapa, media ración or ración. Portion names vary, and a full ración can be much larger than the small plate visitors expect.
- Conejo en salmorejo is rabbit in a garlic, spice and wine marinade — not the cold tomato soup from Andalusia that shares the name.
- Do not assume chickpea or vegetable stews are vegetarian. Garbanzas, ropa vieja and puchero commonly include meat, stock, chorizo or bacon; ask before ordering.
- La Laguna, Santa Cruz, La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz are convenient for local food during a town walk. Guachinches make more sense when the wine country and a rustic lunch are the point of the trip.
- If the group is mixed, choose a restaurant with both small plates and full mains. It is easier for children, vegetarians and anyone who does not want a meat-heavy meal.

Questions about Canarian food and tapas
What should I order for a first Canarian meal?
Start with papas arrugadas and mojo, grilled cheese and one house dish such as garbanzas, fish or rabbit. Ask about portion sizes and add more only if the table is still hungry.
Are tapas always Canarian?
No. Tapas is a serving format used across Spain. Look at the actual dishes: a tapas bar may serve Canarian recipes, mainland Spanish classics, modern small plates or a mixture.
What is gofio?
Gofio is flour made from roasted grain and is one of the most characteristic Canarian foods. It can be mixed into broth as escaldón, kneaded into a firm paste, added to desserts or used at breakfast. Ask how the restaurant serves it before ordering.
When should I choose a guachinche instead?
Choose a guachinche when you want a rustic lunch in the northern wine country with house wine and a short menu. Choose this broader category for dinner, old-town dining and groups that need more variety.
