Where to find coffee and breakfast in Tenerife

A Tenerife cafe may be a specialty-coffee counter in Puerto de la Cruz, a barraquito in La Laguna, brunch in Los Cristianos or a pastry stop in Santa Cruz. These are not interchangeable. If breakfast matters, check that the kitchen serves more than coffee and cake; if coffee matters, look for places that name their beans and brewing methods. This page brings both together without pretending every cafe does everything well.

  • An early opening time does not guarantee a full breakfast. Check for toast, eggs, bowls or sandwiches if you need more than coffee and pastry.
  • Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz have several of the island's stronger specialty-coffee choices; La Laguna works especially well for coffee during an old-town walk.
  • Brunch cafes are easiest to find in Los Cristianos, the south-coast resorts and the larger towns, but kitchen hours may end in the afternoon.
  • A barraquito is a layered Tenerife coffee traditionally made with condensed milk, espresso, milk, cinnamon, lemon and usually liqueur. Ask for a version without alcohol if needed.
  • Do not assume a cafe is suitable for working: check Wi-Fi, sockets, table space and whether long laptop stays fit the room.

Questions about cafes in Tenerife

Where can I find specialty coffee in Tenerife?

Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz have the largest concentration in the current selection, with additional choices in La Laguna and Los Cristianos. Look for cards that mention the roaster, beans, filter coffee or espresso methods rather than relying on the word cafe alone.

What is a barraquito?

It is one of Tenerife's best-known coffee drinks: layered condensed milk, coffee, milk and foam, usually finished with cinnamon, lemon peel and liqueur. In Santa Cruz and La Laguna you may also hear the richer version called a zaperoco. Ask about alcohol before ordering for children or drivers.

Can I rely on a cafe for breakfast?

Not automatically. Some cafes open early but serve only coffee, croissants and cake; others have toast, eggs, bowls, focaccia or a full brunch menu. Check the food and kitchen hours in the card before making it the first stop of a driving day.
