Car rental in Tenerife
4.1 (5)Tenerife South Airport

SIXT at Tenerife South is the more premium-feeling airport option, especially if you want a convertible, SUV, passenger van or newer car class and do not mind using the short shuttle from the terminal.
Travellers split between very smooth handovers with friendly staff and complaints about slow queues, insurance pressure or invoice corrections. It can be a good fit when car class matters more than the absolute lowest price.
Complete online check-in, confirm the deposit/protection package and leave time for the shuttle.

We rented a cabriolet online for 10 days, before arrival. I also made online check-in. Everything was just as expected. Car was exactly that I ordered, almost new, just 3900km. Staff very friendly and it took me just 2 min to receive the keys. The shuttle bus takes you directly from airport to Sixt office.
When returning the car back, I just entered the office, left the keys and the only thing they asked me was: “are you happy?” 😊 Yes! Everything was great.
Attached some photos.

I’ve used this company 3 times now. Never any issues despite the reviews they sometimes get. Not very clean I would say. And this time bringing it back I was asked about the antenna of the car. And I don’t listen to music when I’m driving so I don’t care besides who has an antenna usually a wing thing. Anyway luckily I happened to take a video elsewhere as the pics were for bodywork close nothing distance. All accepted and all okay. The time before that I was rushing so dumped the car and they messaged me whilst on plane saying all okay.
As long as you take out waver insurance for the year !!( yourself before travel ) Which is around 35 -40 for upto 31 days a time. Your fine. Don’t be stupid and think no one has accidents. Even the curbs are high and scratch the cars.

UPDATE: After posting this, customer care reached out to me directly. They apologized and confirmed that forcing a paid upgrade when a category is empty is absolutely against company policy. They have since corrected my invoice to reflect the free upgrade and resolved the billing issue. While the phone support in Tenerife still needs serious improvement, I highly appreciate that management took this feedback seriously and took immediate action to fix the mistake. Changing my rating up from 1 to 3 stars for the great conflict resolution.
Terrible experience in Tenerife – Forced upgrades, safety issues, and zero support
Please keep in mind this is the review strictly for the SIXT Tenerife, I've used SIXT in Germany and it's totally different story, on another level.
I am extremely disappointed with SIXT Tenerife. The entire rental was a disaster from start to finish:
Forced Upgrade: I pre-booked a specific car class via the app at a fixed price. Upon arrival, I was told no cars in that class were available. My only option to get a vehicle was a mandatory upgrade, which nearly doubled the price I expected to pay.
Poor Vehicle Condition: The VW T-Roc I received was in terrible shape and looked like it had been in multiple accidents.
Safety Issue and Ghost Support: On day 5, the Airbag warning light came on. Since this is a major safety hazard, I tried calling support three days in a row. Every time, the AI bot tried to transfer me, and I was left stranded on hold for hours with nobody answering. I also opened a ticket in the app, which went unanswered until three days later—after I had already returned to Germany. Leaving a customer alone with a faulty airbag is completely unacceptable.
Return Chaos: I dropped the car off at 4:00 AM for an early flight as instructed. At 1:00 PM, after landing, I received an email asking if I wanted to extend my rental—meaning they hadn't even registered the return 9 hours later.
The only saving grace was the German SIXT support team, who finally helped me get in touch with the terrible local Spanish team to sort this out.
Verdict: Avoid SIXT in Tenerife. For a premium brand, the vehicle standards and lack of safety support are shameful.

When we arrived, there were only 2 other couples ahead of us waiting for one of the two agents working the desk. It must have taken 30+ minutes to get a car, which is far too long.
They give you a big speech about the expensive insurance options they offer (the top one rivaling the daily price of the rental) and it’s certainly due to the fact that they are very thorough in their return process, as I would later find when the same friendly agent checked in my vehicle.
Upon receiving the keys, we went to the car, which was covered in tiny scratches and dents. Many of them were marked in the online checkout form, but many were not. We spent another 30 minutes or more pouring over the car taking photos and reporting new damage. Unfortunately, a few weeks after the return, I received a notice from Sixt that they identified a new scratch, which is pictured in the first photo. The photos I took during checkout couldn’t confirm without a doubt that the scratch was there before my rental. I pushed back and so did they. I ultimately ended up paying the €148 charge for the scratch, which is only marginally more than the cost of the scratch-only insurance option they offer. The parking spaces are narrow here—it’s probably worth considering buying that option. My credit card would have covered anything worse.
I receive a full Loss Damage Waiver from Avis as a President’s Club member with multiple discount code options. Unfortunately, in Tenerife, their cars were absurdly priced (> €2000) for the full 8-day trip.
I definitely won’t be considering Sixt for future trips to Tenerife or elsewhere. Find a company that offers you protection without charging you a premium—it provides the ultimate peace of mind and allows you to speed through check out and check in.
Minimum age from 18 with valid licence; some vehicle categories have higher age rules and underage fees. Bring the booking voucher, passport or ID, and the payment card required by the rental terms.
Security deposit is held by credit-card pre-authorisation at pickup
Photograph every side of the car, confirm fuel level, damage record, insurance/excess, return point and what to do if there is a breakdown or accident.
A compact car is easiest for resort parking and narrow village streets. Choose an automatic, stronger engine, SUV or larger car only if you need comfort for Teide, Anaga, luggage or a full family group.
Yes if you want Teide, Anaga, Masca, north-coast towns, hidden beaches or flexible weather backups. If you stay in one south resort and mostly use beaches, transfers and taxis may be simpler.
