About

Hertz at Tenerife South gives you a known international rental process, long airport hours, online check-in and one-way/extra options.

It is not the strongest trust card in this batch: the current Google review pattern contains many complaints about queues, unclear credit-card rules, upselling, fuel charges and damage handling.

The page can still be useful for travellers who need Hertz specifically, but the advice is simple: check licence and credit-card requirements before booking, keep every fuel receipt and document the car carefully at pickup and return.

Guest review summary

Commonly mentioned by visitors.

Some travellers still report a smooth rental when there is no queue and paperwork is clear

Long airport hours, online check-in and one-way options are useful logistics

A familiar brand process can be useful when Hertz status or a corporate booking matters

Current Google reviews include many complaints about credit-card rules, upsells and queues

Fuel charges and damage documentation need extra care

This is a brand-specific option rather than the easiest Tenerife rental for most visitors

I don't want to take away from the large volume of negative reviews here but just in case you're already booked with Hertz Tenerife all is not lost! I was pretty worried after reading all the reviews but we had a good experience. No queues (18th April), we didn't pay for their insurance, bought our own separately with cover4rentals at a great price, thankfully didn't need to use it & the guy behind the counter was great & super helpful. I stupidly couldn't remember my credit card pin (don't ask, I never use it) & he provided a workaround whereby I added my credit card to my Google wallet and could use contactless this way without the need for a pin....Good to know! Read the small print, check the car on arrival & departure & try to avoid issues. They released the hold on my credit card the day after leaving back the car which was a Sunday. Like I said I don't want to detract from all the bad reviews but personally all went well for us

If i could i would give 0 stars, absolutely despicable. Even tho there was no people in the queue, i had to wait 15 ish minutes to be called on because the guy was fiddling with some money and paperwork, which i understand, but serve customer and continue your fiddles… a guy apologised for it which was ok, we proceeded with my rental booking, when a guy behind a desk started to make inapropriate comments over my booking, why i book such a large car mind that car i booked was subcompact crossover Hyundai Kona, which is not big at all, yet he made another comment that if i am gonna be taking a pitbull in a car and what size that pitbull is, at that moment i didnt pay much attention, since i was tired after journey wanted to pick up the car as fast as i can… He offered my damage waiver which i already had bought thru third party insurance and asked if i have any preference of the vechile since there is multiple cars that falls in my booking category, and i ended up getting Toyota C-HR hybrid. On cars pick up i was met by a girl, which just looked at my paperwork gave me the keys. No hi no bye. Once i went to car it was clean and nice inside yet battered on outside. Many scratches and weird large tar like spots all over the bodywork. I was given 2 A4 format sheets with damages and pictures if damages.. on my third day of having a car light came up for oil servise, its annoying but nothing major, yet i would have been nice if that been tracked by staff and car would been servised before giving to customer… return went smooth, although there was no clear indicator where to leave the keys ( returned car arround 3am).. after returning the car i found an extra charge of 202€ on my credit card, since i am not in tenerife anymore, i was trying to call to desk no answer for an hour of constant calling non stop.. i never received my final invoice therefore i dont know what are these charges for, but i guess they found a “new” scratch as many other reviews says. For more then 2 weeks after return i have noexplanations nothing, getting in touch with hertz by emails is also hard as they are very slow on theyr replies. Insurance claim seems to complicated too, therefore i thing just swallow they bullet and accept these charges and move on since i have better things to do then chase people in Hertz.. Rental took place between 23-30 of may.. AN UPDATE Since vechile was booked over ryanair cartrawler, i was put thru correct people to claim insurance, yet they had to do investigation and make MIND THAT!!! Make hertz to send me a final bill and "damages" report, so according to hertz theres is scratch on the door which is clearly visible in video that we took on the day of rent, and there is a mark on a mirror which i am pretty sure will buff of with microfibre cloth, yet its not clear from my video if it was or not before... the desk is still ignoring a phone calls, making me balieve that these people absolutely dont care and dont use a phone whatsoever, emailing with hertz is also absolutely pointless because hertz spain ignrores everything and hertz corporate eventually stopped answering any emails too... the only people that made any effort to resolve that was CarTrawler from Ryanair... as mentioned before, avaido at all costs and dont trust hertz... it was first and very much the last time i ever rented from hertz

Very disappointing experience.

I was charged €36.70 for fuel even though I had refilled the car just before returning it and only drove a very short distance to the airport. The amount deducted is clearly disproportionate to the actual fuel difference.

Customer service was not helpful and did not provide a clear explanation or solution. I expected better transparency and fairness.

I would not recommend this service based on my experience.

I am extremely disappointed and angry with this car rental service, and I strongly warn others to stay away.

The rental rules were unclear and misleading from the start. At the desk, we were suddenly told that a credit card was mandatory, even though this was not clearly communicated in advance and is something many other rental companies do not require. On top of that, we were charged extra money for child seats (100 euros), which again is not standard practice elsewhere and was never transparently explained beforehand.

The worst part, however, was the behavior of the staff member at the airport desk. He was incredibly rude, rolling his eyes, mocking us, and acting in a completely unprofessional manner. We were treated with disrespect, as if we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. At one point, he literally said: “Buy the insurance or get off, I don’t care.” This is shocking and unacceptable customer service.

Because they refused to accept our bank cards, we were forced to pay an additional €300 for insurance, under pressure and with no real choice. This felt like extortion rather than a legitimate business practice.

After this experience, I looked up reviews and was horrified to see dozens of similar stories, describing scams, hidden costs, and aggressive behavior. Unfortunately, we read these comments too late.

This company cannot be trusted. The lack of transparency, rude staff, and pressure tactics make this one of the worst car rental experiences I have ever had. I do not recommend this service to anyone. Avoid it at all costs.

Bad.

Two counters in the airport building, referring customers to each other for pick-up. Despite online check-in, all our data was collected again. They tried to upsell us on insurance and a better rental car category. Pre-existing damage was, of course, neither recorded nor included with the rental agreement. Since we arrived late at night, it was very difficult to accurately document the vehicle's condition in the dark parking lot.

Upon return, the vehicle was inspected very carefully. The first question was about our insurance policy. In the third row, they found a scratch on the front bumper that we hadn't seen in our dark photos. The cost: €200.

Conclusion: Take very detailed photos clearly showing all pre-existing damage. You're left with the strong feeling of having been scammed.

Also note that this is a Spanish licensee of Hertz.

Photograph every side of the car, confirm fuel level, damage record, insurance/excess, return point and what to do if there is a breakdown or accident.

What type of car works best for Tenerife?

A compact car is easiest for resort parking and narrow village streets. Choose an automatic, stronger engine, SUV or larger car only if you need comfort for Teide, Anaga, luggage or a full family group.

Is renting a car worth it in Tenerife?

Yes if you want Teide, Anaga, Masca, north-coast towns, hidden beaches or flexible weather backups. If you stay in one south resort and mostly use beaches, transfers and taxis may be simpler.
