Puerto de la Cruz is the north base for travellers who want Tenerife to feel like a town rather than a resort strip. The seafront is rougher than the south, the weather is greener and cloudier, and the rhythm is slower: La Ranilla for dinner, Lago Martiánez for controlled swimming, Playa Jardín for black sand, the Botanical Garden for shade, and La Orotava just uphill.
