A dramatic five-kilometre descent through the ancient volcanic walls below Masca — and a regulated mountain day that needs much more planning than a village stop.
From the roofs of Masca, the gorge looks like a dark cut in the mountains running all the way to the Atlantic. Inside it, the walls close in, old water channels and farming terraces appear between the rock, and the lower trail reaches some of Tenerife's oldest exposed volcanic layers. Water has been carving this passage for more than five million years. That landscape makes Barranco de Masca one of the island's most memorable hikes — but the village viewpoint and the gorge are two completely different plans.
The current public route is a high-difficulty descent of about 5 km, from roughly 750 m to sea level, and takes around four hours before the boat journey. Access is booked and controlled. You must reach Masca from Santiago del Teide on TITSA 355, arrive early for the visitor-centre checks, wear closed mountain shoes with deep grip, carry ID, food and at least 1.5 litres of water, and buy the boat ticket separately. Children under eight cannot enter. If rough sea closes the jetty, hikers may have to turn around and climb back up, so book this only if everyone in your group is fit enough for that possibility.

Such a scenic hike! Although the difficulty level is high, the hike is very enjoyable and doable within 3-4 hours (photo and food stops included). Throughout the walk you’re surrounded with mountains, palm trees and beautiful greenery. Definitely recommended!!

It is impossible to describe this place and the adventure it offers in a few sentences. Almost 6 km in truly exotic, wild, hard-to-reach conditions, rubbing against vertical rocks up to 100 m high or squeezing between stones. The island's top attraction. Dear friends, the rules of passage have changed now. You must read the new regulations and meet the required conditions. We had different ones (no conditions). Different times but how grateful I am for that adventure. Greetings to my companions from the trail. Those from the east and west. A wonderful 4 hours spent. A unique gorge that will remain in your memory until the end. Remember good shoes, plenty of water and a camera. The world is ours!

Masca Hike – Pretty, Easy, but a Bit of a Logistics Puzzle 🌿🤗
The hike is beautiful and not hard at all—though it starts with you hugging a tree (literally, the path winds right around one!). It’s charming, but a funny little moment that caught me off guard.
Getting to the office and then coordinating the boat ride afterward is the tricky part. The boat trip itself is incredible, but the whole setup isn’t the easiest to organize or the cheapest.
If you’re only on the island a week, I’d recommend other hikes first. But if you have more time and want the full Masca adventure, it’s worth the effort.

Overall a bit of a disappointing experience. The trail itself in the gorge is nice but I much preferred other free hikes in other parts of the island. This hike is way too expensive for what it is and also quite annoying to plan (bus + permit + boat + bus again) Everything felt a bit exaggerated, like they are really milking that tourism cow. It is an easy hike in the end. Also: why told to come half an hour before our booked slot at the opening time to then have to wait 40min? Some of the staff at the tourist office were a bit rude..
The boat is part of the route
Buy the boat ticket before the hike and leave enough time after your descent slot. Landing in Los Gigantes still leaves a separate return journey to Santiago del Teide.

Plan for the harder version
The normal plan is downhill, but a sudden jetty closure can force hikers to retrace the gorge uphill. If that backup sounds unrealistic for someone in your group, choose another Teno walk.

Yes. The village is a separate visit. The booking and equipment rules apply to the regulated gorge trail.
No under the current independent-access rules. Use TITSA 355 from Santiago del Teide and keep the ticket as proof for the access check.
Yes for the current descent format. It is bought separately from trail admission, and the return from Los Gigantes must also be planned.
The sea exit may close at short notice. Hikers can be instructed to turn around and return to the visitor centre on foot.
Children under eight are not admitted. Older minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and the route still requires good fitness.
