Upper cable-car viewpoint route•Teide National Park, Tenerife
The most rewarding short walk from Teide's upper cable-car station: Pico Viejo's vast crater, the 1798 lava fields and western islands without the summit permit.
From La Rambleta at roughly 3,550 m, PNT 12 runs 781 m to Mirador Pico Viejo. The official estimate is about 30 minutes one way, with 58 m of elevation change and medium difficulty. On a clear day the viewpoint looks into Pico Viejo's crater, about 800 m across, and across the dark lava from the 1798 Narices del Teide eruption. La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro can appear beyond the caldera. Along the way you may notice fumaroles and sulphur in the air.
This is not the summit trail, so the Telesforo Bravo summit permit is not normally needed. You still need access to La Rambleta, usually by cable car, and the upper paths can close because of wind, ice or maintenance. Check the cable-car and trail status before leaving the coast. Walk slowly, use secure shoes and carry warmth and sun protection; 781 m at 3,550 m does not feel like 781 m by the sea. If PNT 12 is closed, use the open La Rambleta viewpoint rather than crossing a barrier.
