About

Vilaflor is easy to reduce to a coffee stop on the road to Teide, but the highest town in the Canary Islands deserves a little more time. At roughly 1,400 metres, its compact historic centre feels noticeably cooler than the coast. Walk around Plaza Doctor Pérez Cáceres and the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, whose origins go back to a chapel built in 1530, then continue to Pino Gordo — the enormous Canary pine whose trunk has the largest diameter in the archipelago.

Time needed:
45–90 minutes for the village and Pino Gordo; 4–5 hours for Paisaje Lunar
Entry fee:
Free village stop
Transport:
Best by car as part of a Teide day
Parking:
Use marked village parking
Best time:
Morning before the Teide climb
Weather:
Cooler than the coast; keep layers ready
Altitude:
Around 1,400 m — the highest town centre in the Canary Islands
Pino Gordo:
Pino Gordo is a short drive from the centre and has the archipelago's widest Canary-pine trunk
Paisaje Lunar:
PR-TF 72 is a separate 12.9 km, 4–5 hour, medium-high difficulty hike

If Teide is next, Vilaflor is a useful place to put on a layer and slow down before the high mountain. It can also be a destination in its own right, but do not confuse a village walk with the Paisaje Lunar hike. The official PR-TF 72 circuit is 12.9 km, takes around four to five hours and is rated medium-high difficulty. Plan that as a separate hike; for a normal Teide day, the village and Pino Gordo are the realistic combination.

Q&A (6)

Is Vilaflor worth stopping at before Teide?

Yes. Allow enough time for the historic centre and Pino Gordo rather than treating Vilaflor only as a roadside coffee stop.

Is Vilaflor colder than the coast?

Usually yes. The village is around 1,500 m above sea level, and Teide will often feel colder and more exposed again.

How long should I spend in Vilaflor?

Allow 45–90 minutes for the village and Pino Gordo. Paisaje Lunar is a separate four-to-five-hour hiking plan.

What is Pino Gordo?

A huge Canary pine near Vilaflor that works as a short nature stop if you have a car and a little extra time.

Can I add Paisaje Lunar casually?

No. The official PR-TF 72 circuit is 12.9 km, takes about four to five hours and is rated medium-high difficulty. Plan proper footwear, water and daylight.

Is Vilaflor good for lunch?

It can be, but on a Teide day a short coffee or early meal often works better than a long stop before the climb.
