Santa Cruz's contemporary-art centre is as much about the perforated concrete building as the changing exhibitions inside, with MUNA and the market close enough to make a full city culture route.

TEA is not a museum with one permanent set of masterpieces, so check the current programme before you go. The building by Herzog & de Meuron with Virgilio Gutiérrez creates long ramps, a diagonal public passage and thousands of pixel-like openings that change the light throughout the day. Inside are temporary exhibitions, MiniTEA for families, an art library and a cinema showing independent films in original version. Even when a particular exhibition is not for you, the architecture and location can still justify a short visit.

Exhibition entry is currently free, Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–20:00; Monday is closed except on public holidays. The regular cinema runs Friday–Sunday at 19:00 and costs €4. Bags or backpacks larger than 25 × 25 cm are not allowed in the galleries, and there is no cloakroom, so do not arrive with beach or airport luggage. Allow 60–90 minutes, then walk to MUNA or Mercado Nuestra Señora de África — both are nearby. Treat cinema, workshops and guided activities as separate plans that may need checking or booking.

Unexpected place. I didn’t expect to find something like this in Tenerife. Amazing modern architecture — it’s genuinely nice just to be inside the building. Open library, open exhibition spaces, lots of light and calm.

I was really impressed. If you want to see the Canaries from a contemporary cultural perspective, this place is a must-visit.

Very nice space, modern with option to visit exhibitions for free. They currently have amazing exhibition of Canaries islander painter Néstor and his late works are just out of this world, be sure to visit till 1st of March if you like artistic symbolism.

I was really impressed. If you want to see Tenerife from a contemporary cultural perspective, this place is a must-visit. place. I didn’t expect to find something like this in Tenerife, modern architectural building, it’s impressive to be inside the building with open library and art exhibition spaces.

Pleasantly surprised, not only by the great Herzog & de Meuron architecture, which we were expecting, but by the great contemporary art, which was a bonus. So glad we decided to stay in Santa Cruz and not the south, so many great things to do. The gallery is free and has a great library and cafe.

Use the building, not only the galleries

Even a short TEA stop works if you let the architecture carry part of the visit: the open circulation, concrete surfaces and ravine-side position are part of why it belongs in Santa Cruz.
