About

A scenic ocean-fed pool near Los Gigantes where access may be closed and sudden waves make it unsuitable as a guaranteed family swim.

Time needed:
30 minutes-2 hours
Entry fee:
Free access
Transport:
Car, taxi or local walk from Los Gigantes / Puerto Santiago
Parking:
Street or nearby parking; allow time
Best time:
Only when official access is open and the sea is clearly calm
Weather:
Do not enter with swell, waves reaching the wall or any closure in place
Main risk:
Sudden waves can overtop the wall; access may be closed
Best use:
Viewpoint first; never bypass gates, tape or municipal restrictions

The concrete wall makes Isla Cangrejo look protected, but it remains part of the Atlantic. Fatal wave accidents have occurred on this section of coast, and the municipality can close access with gates, tape or other controls. Never bypass a closure, even when people are already below. If official access is open, first watch several sets of waves from a safe position and stay away from the outer wall and exposed rock; leaving without swimming is the correct decision whenever there is doubt. For a predictable family swim, use a supervised beach or municipal pool instead.

Guest review summary

Commonly mentioned by visitors.

People like the Los Gigantes and La Gomera views, the sunset mood and the protected-pool feeling when the sea is genuinely calm.

Early arrivals often find the small pool area easier before crowds build.

It works as a memorable short detour for visitors already near Los Gigantes or Puerto Santiago.

Wave danger is the main issue: rough water can overtop the pool and make the edge unsafe quickly.

Slippery algae, rock and limited facilities make it less comfortable than managed swimming spots.

It is not a reliable family swim; sea conditions decide whether entering the water makes sense.

Great pool! Recommend going there as early as u can because it gets crowded and also in the afternoon is not safe to use the pool because the waves tend to be really big. The views here are awesome and i really enjoyed swimming here. P.S. Entering in the water you’ll see that the rocks are very slippery so be careful with that and notice the fish mingling there also 🐟

We came around 10-11am and there weren’t that many people. It was a nice area to swim as it was protected from strong waves. It got busy after midday but we already had finished our swim so it was good.

Cool little place to visit. Not the most exciting but certainly unique and worth stopping for if you’re driving past or nearby.

Be careful depending on weather as it can be extremely dangerous.

It can get quite busy too.

The rocks are very slippery, it's dangerous in the pool, and you always stand the chance of being washed out to sea or smashed on the rocks by a rogue wave, but you always get some thrill seekers willing to take the chance! Enter at your own risk...

It's a cool place to come like garrachico there is a rock formation pool and then there is the sea which you can swim in but note it is rough in the right side of the pool even when water is calm and there is cliff where you can get pulled under so avoid swimming there as I'm sure people can drown of they can't swim. Swim on the left side of the pool if you can swim. Water in the sea is clean and clear but the pool is somewhat stagnant and warm so best enjoyed earlier in the day... as who knows who has pissed in there hahahaha. But it has cool views and sunset and there is loads of parking on the streets there is a car park in the path leading down to the steps. Obviously no toilets. Wear rock shoes I got away with flip flops but the paths are rocky to the pool and if you want a nice spot to chill and sunbathe.

Update note 4 people died here in 2025 following a large wave sweeping them out to see weather was bad at the time. So avoid going if weather is bad. I went in heart of June. Please note the comment below.

Community tips (3)

The Risk Is Real

This is not a place for brave photos in swell. The 2025 incident makes conservative decisions essential.

Sunset From Dry Rock

The viewpoint value is strong even without swimming. Keep sunset as a visual plan, not a late-water plan.

Slippery Before The Water

Many problems start before swimming: algae, wet rock and awkward entry are already enough to injure people.

Q&A (4)

Is Charco de Isla Cangrejo safe?

It is not a guaranteed safe swim. Access may be closed, and sudden waves can cross the wall. Never bypass barriers; leave without swimming whenever conditions are doubtful.

Can children swim there?

Do not use it as a default children’s swimming plan. Choose a supervised beach or municipal pool for a more predictable family day.

Do I need water shoes?

Water shoes do not make this pool safe. Access restrictions and wave conditions come first; never enter during a closure or active swell.

Is it good for sunset?

Yes, but only from a dry, legal position well back from the wall. Do not let a sunset photo pull you past barriers or towards wet rock.
