Candelaria works best as a compact walk through Tenerife's island identity, not as a single photograph of the basilica. Start on Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, where nine bronze Guanche menceyes face the Atlantic, then enter the white basilica that made the town the Canary Islands' main pilgrimage centre. The square links two histories that are often presented separately: the indigenous island and the Catholic devotion that followed.
After the basilica, continue to the Cueva de Achbinico, also called the San Blas chapel, the first sanctuary in Candelaria dedicated to the Virgin. Return through pedestrian Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres and finish on the promenade with coffee or fish. Two hours is enough for this route; major feast days bring powerful atmosphere but also crowds, traffic changes and a very different kind of visit.
