Tenerife's most important pilgrimage church stands on a square open to the Atlantic, where the Virgin of Candelaria, nine Guanche kings and the island's layered history meet in one place.
The basilica makes more sense when you do not treat it as a single church interior. Begin with the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, patroness of the Canary Islands, then cross the Plaza de la Patrona past the nine bronze mencey statues and continue along the water to the Cueva de Achbinico. According to local tradition, the Guanches kept the earlier image there before the conquest. That short walk connects Catholic pilgrimage, Guanche memory and the sea far better than a quick photograph of the facade.
Entry is free. The official municipal schedule lists Tuesday to Sunday 07:30–19:30 and Monday 15:00–19:30; access to the Camarín is normally Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–19:00 and Monday 15:00–19:00, except during services. This is an active sanctuary, not a museum: if a mass is under way, attend quietly or leave sightseeing until afterwards. The square is exposed to sun and wind, and parking becomes difficult around the major February and August celebrations. For an ordinary visit, allow 45–90 minutes for the basilica, statues, cave and waterfront rather than driving here for the nave alone.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Candelaria stands on one of the most symbolically important sites in Tenerife, where indigenous Guanche heritage meets centuries of Catholic tradition. According to local legend, the original image of the Virgin was discovered here by the Guanche people long before the Spanish conquest, making this spot a spiritual focal point for the entire Canary Islands. Today, the square in front of the basilica is also marked by striking statues of the Guanche kings (menceyes), honouring the island’s pre-Hispanic past.

Beautiful basilica dedicated to the Patroness of Tenerife, the Virgin of Candelaria. It is a mandatory visit for anyone interested in learning about the spiritual heritage, combined with a unique and impressive architecture. From what I could read it is a church built not many years ago but that gathers and keeps in its construction and interior a beautiful seal like the great old churches. Very old and very beautiful images can be observed and you can see the Virgin up close when you go up to its second floor. Simply beautiful!!
